It always nice to talk with people who think like we do, it reaffirms and validates our ideas and beliefs. Talking to people whose thinking is far from ours can often be a painful experience so most of us, myself included, have the vast majority of our serious discussions with the like-minded people in our lives. While this is our comfort zone are we really just spinning our wheels? If We exclusively speak to people who will agree with us how will We ever change anything? How will we ever learn anything? Aren’t we keeping one foot nailed to the floor so we can only go round in circles?
Now if you REALLY want an experience in going round in circles try TALKING TO A FAR LEFT LIBERAL!!! These conversations go something like THIS
” So you are in favor of gun control, is that right”? Kelly asked
“Yes I sure am, guns kill people and so we need to make them illegal” Sally answered
“Guns kill people like spoons made Oprah fat! A gun is only a tool and I could kill you with a knife or a hammer, should we ban THOSE”?
” That is not the same, guns are meant for killing people but a spoon and knife have other purposes than killing human beings, GUNS DON’T.”
“Guns protect people, guns help hunters feed their families and thin out overpopulations of deer. Guns can and are used for sport like the Olympic Skeet shooting event so guns have many useful and non harmful purposes, farmers use them to fend off wolves and snakes and other dangerous creatures.”
“Those things are not why people buy guns, they buy guns for killing other people, they are violence lovers who want to have power over other people”
” There are over 85 million LEGAL gun owners in this country and nobody was killed today with a LEGAL GUN so how do you figure gun owners are so violent”?
“Well they just didn’t get the chance! They are just waiting and hoping for a situation where they can get away with shooting somebody. The world would be a lot safer if only the government had guns, citizen do not need them, PERIOD!”
Kelly takes a deep breath and says ” So when we make guns illegal do you think that criminals, who do not obey our OTHER laws are suddenly going to obey a gun control law? Are they going to lay down their weapons and stop their gun violence”?
“SEE THAT’S IT! You admit that guns cause violence”! Sally said, with that tone of superiority that liberal are known for.
” I give up, you’re a hopeless case.”
Now Sally had let her own stupidity validate her argument even though her thinking is clearly distorted.
Kelly on the other hand has learned a lesson: Going round in circles only leaves a person DIZZY!!
So what then are we to do? Do we stay in our own little world or do we venture out and go round in circles by talking to people who JUST DON’T GET IT?
Well for me this is the answer: Yes we talk to our liberal friends and neighbors, we at least have to TRY but once it becomes clear that they are never going to understand simple logic we should SMILE, thank them for their opinions and walk away! What will this accomplish? In truth probably nothing BUT if we plant the seed we have at least DONE OUR PART!
